Automated event payloads come in many shapes and sizes. These infinitely different event structures pose a problem for users who want to send them all to the same place to page on-call staff. Unless that on-call solution supports the schema directly, you’re out of luck. While we’re proud of the number of integrations we support today for event sources into on-call, we also think the best number that we should support is infinity.

That’s why – available today – custom event sources have landed in FireHydrant’s modern on-call tool, Signals. Now, no matter what the smoke signal looks like or where it comes from, you can alert your on-call teams instantly.

Different event source, different payload

Different types of incoming payloads offer different pieces of information, and exposing them is an invaluable nugget for on-call members that can be the difference between a 10 minute fix, or a 10 hour fix.

Bring your own payload

No matter what your payload looks like, you can now add a simple snippet of your own Javascript to Signals and convert it into whatever you think is useful and beneficial to your on-call teams. Want a link to an internal dashboard? No problem. Do you want to add fire emojis in the summary to create more urgency? Well, we don’t totally endorse that strategy but we also say go for it! The world is your oyster.

Test, Validate, Ship

The more advanced you get with custom event sources, the more that you’ll need to test and validate. As engineers ourselves, we didn’t need to ask our customer base if they needed a debugger. We know our advanced users will need a debugger. The built in validation of custom event sources builds confidence, which is essential when it comes to alerting.

Not only can you add custom event sources to your account in FireHydrant, you can easily validate them right from the same UI.

Event Sources

Ingesting events from various applications is essential to building an on-call tool. And while we’ll always support first-class, hand crafted event sources - like the ones you see today – this capability will enable every single customer to cater to their own, unique needs.
