Name: Kate Stowell
When did you join FireHydrant? In January of 2021
What do you do at FireHydrant? I am a Marketing Manager focusing on demand generation.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

So far, what I love most about my job is how every day is different. Working for a startup, every day is exciting, and there are always new projects, new challenges, and new opportunities around the corner. I also love how creative I get to be. This is a little bit harder for me to tap into since I wasn’t able to express my creativity in my last role. So, I am so excited to finally be in a position where I can tap into that side of my brain again.

Which female leaders do you admire and why?

I am a huge Ruth Bader Ginsburg admirer. Ruth (a.k.a the Notorious R.B.G) was a female icon. As the Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States and co-founder of the Women’s Rights Project at the American Civil Liberties Union, she was an advocate for women’s rights, LGBT rights,  and racial equality in a time when these groups didn’t have many advocates. She is incredibly inspiring because although she was constantly faced with adversity, she was a fighter and fought for what she believed in no matter what.

What advice would you give to other women interested in finding a role like yours?

If you are not currently in a marketing role and are interested in pursuing a marketing career, there are so many opportunities to get marketing experience in your current position. I would start by reaching out to the Marketing team at your company and ask them if they need any help with projects (they almost always do). If you are currently searching for a new job, my biggest advice would be to be open-minded. Often, we get stuck into thinking we need to stay in the same industry or same role based on our experience. Take a look at your resume and make sure you include projects or accomplishments that are agnostic to many different roles and keep an open mind when searching. Don’t pigeonhole yourself and not apply to a position because you don’t think you have the right experience; let them tell you that. To be extremely cliché, you’ll never know if you never try.

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in your career to date?

The biggest and most important lesson I have learned in my career so far is to go after what you want; if you wait for things to come to you, you’ll end up waiting too long. If you are looking for a promotion or a raise, don’t just sit back and wait for the company to promote you.  Have a conversation with your boss to let them know your goal and ask them what steps you need to take to get there. Also, be sure to keep a log somewhere of all of the tasks or projects you have accomplished as you go; this way, you’ll have it handy if you need to showcase what you’ve accomplished in the role.

What are your favorite websites that you can be found browsing during your spare time?

My new favorite website is Lunchclub (shoutout to my boss, Joanna Lin, for recommending it). These days, it’s become so much harder to meet and interact with new people. Gone are the days when you could go to a conference and network with people in your same role or industry. Lunchclub helps to facilitate conversations with professionals who have similar interests or careers as you. You choose how many people per week and at what times you’d like to meet them, and they pair you up with another like-minded professional, and you can have a coffee chat virtually! I’ve met incredible people and chatted about work and life, which has been so refreshing after being cooped up in our homes each day!
