What do you do at FireHydrant? Head of Marketing

What do you most enjoy about your job?

It feels a little cliché to say, but definitely the people.

I’ve enjoyed working with everyone on the team, and it’s refreshing because we have such diversity in our backgrounds, knowledge, where we live, who we are - it’s just a really smart and kind group of people. The other things I enjoy are the challenges we’re solving. I was previously in the adtech and martech space for a long time, so devtools is entirely new to me, and frankly, very interesting, complex, and exciting.

What are some ways working at FireHydrant challenged you and enabled you to grow?

Since devtools is a new space for me, I’ve encountered my fair share of just trying to quickly ramp up to understand the lingo, the players, and complexities. With a new industry, I’ve also had to tackle marketing to a new audience. While I’d love to use my bag of tricks, I’m realizing that I’ve had to shift my approach quite a bit to fit a developer/engineering audience, but I love that I can be a bit more playful and direct in our marketing activations.

What's your favorite FireHydrant story?

This story involves the domain*. Lake Placid, and Lana Del Ray’s… father? Bobby, FireHydrant’s CEO, is often up in Lake Placid and one evening found himself at a dinner talking about FireHydrant and the domain. One of the dinner guests mentioned they could get the domain for him, and the next day, connected him with the right people to purchase the domain! Turns out that man was Lana Del Ray’s father.

*While we haven’t actively used .com (we're currently .io) quite yet, we do own it, and we’ll eventually transition to it.

Which women leaders do you admire and why?

I tend to admire women who choose unconventional paths - Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elizabeth Warren, Grace Hopper, Madeleine Albright - but there’s one person that’s not as well known, Yuri Kochiyama.

When I was in high school, I was a part of the Yuri Kochiyama Leadership Program, which was run by students at the University of Michigan. She was an activist during the civil rights movement in the 60’s, most well known for being a Japanese-American in the Nation of Islam (and close friends with Malcom X). While she isn’t without controversy, nor do I believe in all of her beliefs, I do admire her strength in standing up for what she believed in and doing something about it.

What advice would you give to other women interested in finding a role like yours?

I’ve always been a curious person, and because I thrive on understanding how things work, I spend a lot of time observing people, asking a lot of questions, and trying to understand how it all works. My recommendation is to talk to people in roles that you’re interested in: ask questions and listen. There are so many things that factor into how someone got to where they are, so the more information you gather, the more ideas you can come up with to get into roles you’re interested in.

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in your career to date?

Find a great mentor, and nurture that relationship. I've been very fortunate to have some amazing mentors and I would not be where I am today without having them to talk to and help me along the way.

What are your favorite websites that you can be found browsing during your spare time?

I spend more time in apps than I do specific sites - my vices are Instagram and Twitter.
